The Five-Year Engagement premieres today, and it's a topic that hits close to home for the BG web team—between the two of us, we have a five-year engagement (two for Kristen, three for Stefania). So, in honor of the movie, we're sharing what we've learned about the benefits and drawbacks to having a longer-than-average engagement. THE PROS Time to Build the Life You Want and Prepare for Marriage One of the best parts of having a long engagement is that it gives you breathing room to focus on your career, get a sense of what your partner will be like as a spouse and decide what you both want for your marriage (living plans, when to have children, etc). It's a commitment towards a future together—one worth waiting for. My fiancé and I decided to get engaged because we were ready to take that next step after dating, but our plans to tie the knot in 2012 were derailed when his physical therapy program added an extra year to their requirements. An extra 365 days is a small price to pay for finding the person I want to spend the rest of my life with! In a career that has spanned over 30 years I have played with some of the industries most respected artists. I've played with Don Felder of The Eagles, Rick Wakeman of Yes and John Miles. I've worked with famous producers and have worked in some of the worlds top studios.

Most function bands - even those with the slickest and most professional web sites - are run as a collective by musicians that have “regular” jobs during the week. There’s rarely anyone at the helm and they rarely depend upon their gigs for their income.

We do things differently. I run the band as a business and am effectively the MD. This is how I pay my bills and I take my responsibility to our clients extremely seriously.
It’s my name “above the door” and so it’s my responsibility to ensure we deliver on our promises.

I believe in offering the same level of service that you would receive if you booked through an agency and offer the following assurances:

My name on the contract - one point of contract and not collective
Replacement Musicians - I maintain a network of highly accomplished musicians, all of whom are familiar with our material and are able to replace regular members at short notice. Therefore in the event of the guitarist breaking his fingers the day before an engagement we can arrange a replacement with zero impact upon the client.
Replacement Bands - I have established links with numerous bands that are of a high standard. In the unlikely event of us having to cancel a booking we can offer the same calibre of band for no additional fee.
Insurance - As well as the usual Public Liability Insurance which is now an absolute necessity, I also insure against event cancellation to further mitigate risk.
